Lung designates each of the two organs situated in the thorax that ensure the exchange of gases via the respiratory function. The lung is an invaginated organ that enables the exchange of vital gases, notably oxygen and carbon dioxide. The oxygen is necessary for the body's metabolism and the carbon dioxide has to be evacuated. The lung participates in other functions, such as the regulation of the acido basic metabolism or the filtering of the blood with elimination of small clots.
The lung is ventilated by thoracic movements on breathing in and breathing out which constitutes the respiratory cycle. Tobacco, by its harmful effects, can lead to a deterioration of the respiratory cycle and destruction of the lungs. With tobacco consumption the lung can become obstructed by the tar contained in the cigarette thus provoking breathing difficulties.
Deterioration of the lung may be accompanied by a cancer (lung cancer is the most frequent cancer of smokers) and lead to the death of the smoker.
The European HELP programme for fighting against tobacco can bring you a lot of information and support for giving up smoking.
