DEPENDENCY

Dependency is a state in which a person feels an imperative need for a toxic substance because of repeated absorption of the latter.

Dependency on a product means the necessity to regularly consume the product in question so as to avoid the appearance of withdrawal symptoms. Dependency on a product leads to various physical and mental problems. One speaks of dependency from the moment that one has noticed at least three of the following symptoms over a period of 12 months: * Tolerance (when it is necessary to take a bigger dose to get the same effect) * Increase in the quantity consumed or the duration of the consumption * An effort is necessary in controlling consumption * Abandoning an activity because of the consumption * Persistence in consumption in spite of physical or mental problems linked to the consumption of the product.

Dependency on tobacco consists of an excessive and uncontrolled consumption of cigarettes. Aside from the social malaise it produces, this dependency also leads to various illnesses such as cancers, cardiovascular accidents and chronic bronchitis which can in turn lead to the death of the subject. Dependency on tobacco is also harmful to the smoker's entourage via the inhalation of cigarette smoke.

The European HELP programme for fighting against tobacco can bring you a lot of information and support for giving up smoking.
