Smoke-free Europe 2005 conference.
16/05/2005
The Smoke-free Europe 2005 conference will take place at the Hotel Royal in Luxembourg on Thursday 2 June 2005. The conference will examine the experiences in countries in the vanguard of smoke-free legislation and will ask what can be learnt from their expert handling of the legislation in their countries.
This event aims to bring together the most senior European and national policy-makers, diplomatic representatives, scientists, civil society and members of the international press. After the introduction of tobacco-control legislation in Ireland, Italy and Norway, the objective is to examine the effects of the legislation in these countries and the policy implications for the European Union and its Member States.

The conference will also ask whether the time is approaching when the European Union will seek to protect those who currently work in tobacco smoke polluted environments. In addition to keynote addresses by the Ministers who pioneered and lead the effort to create healthy and safe workplace environments, the European Commissioner responsible for Health, Mr Markos Kyprianou could give an address. A senior representative of the World Health Organisation is also expected to speak at the meeting.

The social partners confirmed their presence at the conference, together with Ministers of Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg and Latvia. The Luxembourg Presidency endorsed the conference. For full details please refer to: www.smokefreeeurope.com
