The CIFCOT 2nd International Francophone Conference on Tobacco Control was held in Paris from 18 to 21 September 2005. The conference was attended by 700 delegates from 33 countries of the French-speaking world and concluded with the Paris Appeal. The delegates unanimously adopted that:
- the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has to be ratified, transposed and applied by the governments of the French-speaking countries
- public opinion, especially in the countries of Africa, Asia and the Indian Ocean, needs to be mobilised to implement an action plan comprising i.a. a ban on tobacco advertising, annual tobacco tax hikes, a general ban on smoking in public places and workplaces, the provision to smokers of quit aids and effective information concerning the effects of smoking for the public (especially for disadvantaged groups).
