New Quit Line in Cyprus
30/09/2005
Since 12 September 2005, the Cyprus Non Smokers League has instituted the Cyprus Quitline Service in cooperation with the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, (CY.T.A.), the Ministry of Health, and, of course, the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society.

The Cyprus Quitline consists of two parts. The first part offers information, encouragement and advice in a recorded form; the caller (smoker) is advised to follow five stages before consulting a specialist. The second part offers consultation by a specialist. The recorded messages -as well as the consultation with the specialist- are offered free of charge, except for the cost of the telephone call. The "Service" will be run as a pilot project for a period of three months.

The telephone number of the service is 22448000

The Cyprus Non Smokers League has been involved in tobacco control activities since February 1987 when it was first established as one of the main activities of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society, to wage and win the war against cancer.

Ever since, the Cyprus Non Smokers League has entered into all kinds of activities to spread the message that smoking is detrimental to the health not only of the smoker himself but also to all those near him, when he smokes.

Printing and widely distributing print material, including audiovisual material, discussions over radio and television, talks in schools for pupils and students and at parents gatherings, as well as lobbying for the introduction of laws and regulations on smoking in public places and workplaces, have been some of the activities entered into, during all this time.
